Today’s gardening experience consisted of picking peppers that had been planted by my peers and children from the community some time ago. We also took a look at the sunflower seeds that we all planted just last week and to my surprise the sunflower seeds had started to grow. I was honestly surprise that the flowers had actually already started to grow, being that we had just planted them. I just knew it would take a while before we saw any results; However, it felt good to see the progress of our work, especially being that I wasn’t too fond of the whole idea of gardening to begin with and although it’s still not my favorite thing to do it does make the whole experience a little exciting when you’re able to see some actual results and growth from the work you’ve down. It is also great to see the children we work with also get excited about the work they’ve done even after all these years that they have come and worked at the garden to still get excited is amazing. It’s not every day that you see a child or young teen get excited about a plant or flower growing.

My Sketch for the Future Fabulous Garden
In an effort to glamour up the area I also came up with the idea to put flowers around the trees as well as a bird houses or simply just one to put in the regular tree. My last two final glamour touches I came up with was the idea to plant a lemon tree and to put a kiddy pool with a fountain and gold fishes inside. This idea about the kiddy pool was simply an effort to give the younger and older children something like a pet to take care of and just admire. Although some of the ideas I have may take a while to develop like the apple trees and lemon trees I believe in the long run it will pay off and teach the younger generation lessons that they can take home and do themselves.
Issues with a supervisor or coworker
As interns we face many issues at our agencies some small and some big, whether small or not they should always be resolved in an professional manner. below are isuues that may arise at an agency, things to think about and ways to resolve them.
Issues that may arise.......
Let say you have been at your internship for about 2 weeks and have not been assigned anything to do.
Let’s say that your supervisor has given you the job to answer the phone but has given your peer the job to interview clients and write up paper work
Your supervisor does not allow you to use your phone, however you see your peer using their phone.
Your supervisor says inappropriate things to you when your alone in his or her office.
Ask yourself a couple of questions before trying to resolve the issue.......
Have you presented yourself in a way that makes you seem as if you can not handle a task greater than the one given to you.
Is the issue you are having that important that you need to bring it to the supervisor’s attention.
Ways to resolve your issues.....
Realize that some conflicts are inevitable at work.
Handle conflicts sooner rather than later. Resolve the issue when it starts, as it only gets worse with time.
Invite the other person to talk about the situation. A hurried conversation at your desk between emails and phone calls won’t solve anything. You need a peaceful location and time to address the issue.
Ask nicely: If somebody has done something that made you angry, or if you don’t understand their viewpoint or actions, simply asking about it, it can make a world of difference.
Apologize for your part in the conflict. More often than not everyone involved has done something to create and prolong the conflict.
Gardening
After completing the task of planting the sunflower seeds me and classmates of mine drew up a sketch of idea we had for the area we planted the sunflower seeds, most of us thought it to be a good idea to plant some trees as well as other fruits and flowers to make the area a nice place to hang out and talk. I’m excited to see what it on the agenda next week and how well the flowers will grow.

My first Gardening Experience
Today I went to the Garden with my field instructor, fellow classmates and a group of kids from the community. Together we pick weeds and peppers that had been planted a while back. For me this was my first time going out to the garden and meeting the children. I have to say that this was definitely different for me. I grow up in the city and didn't experience or get the opportunity to do any gardening. I’m sure I'll like it more once we start to actually plant vegetables and flowers. Overall the experience was nice and the young lady that I got partnered up with was nice as well, although she was a little quiet; however, I'm sure with time the two of us will get along just fine.
After the gardening experience, I got a better understanding of the purpose and the benefits of gardening with the kids. I Personally believe it teaches the children about planting vegetables, flowers and fruits and also allows them to learn about some of the different names, colors, and types it also gives them something different to do than just watching TV and play video games. It’s something they may not really understand now but will definitely show and bring about a positive light in their life later.

1st Phase of Treatment
Abstract
This Podcast will talk about the first phase treatment also referred to as helping process. During the first meeting of the first phase of treatment the client and worker usually take this time to resolve the clients’ problem and promote their clients problem solving skills. The main region of concern in the first phase of treatment include exploring the client’s problem, establishing rapport and enhancing motivation, formulating a multi-dimensional assessment, mutually negotiating goals and formulating a contract, and finally making referrals.
Introduction
In the first phase of treatment or the helping process, is established at the beginning of the treatment phase, and focuses on the clients presenting problems. If the client I’m working with has been mandated by the courts, the primary concern would be to first focus on their specific legal issue. The next step in this process would be to place emphasis on any serious health and safety concerns that may require immediate attention. An example of this would include if the client is a danger to themselves or others. Assessing if the client is a clinical risk should be establish
Factual Paragraph 1
During the first meeting with the client which is also known as the intake process, the goal is to find out the clients presenting problems. Usually we find that the presenting problem is the client’s true understanding of why he or she truly needs help. As social workers we must realize that the issue that the clients have come in for may in fact be the primary problem but not the real presenting problem. In an effort to make sense of the true presenting problem the social worker should ask open-ended questions. By asking open ended questions you allow the client to describe the event and in an effort to find out in greater detail about the clients presenting problem the social worker may also ask closed-ended questions. Lastly during this intake the social worker should also pay attention to the body language and emotions of the client when answering the open-ended and close-ended questions.
Factual Paragraph 2
In addition to finding out the presenting problem another important thing to do during the first phase of treatment is to build a rapport with the client. The first meeting with the client is the most important because it can determine the willingness to disclose information to the worker. So in order to do so the social worker should be sure to be attentive during the interview and other meetings the worker and client have in order to show the client that they are being listened to and the worker is trying to relate and be understanding to the clients problems.
Factual Paragraph 3
In an effort to build a great rapport the worker may want to self-disclose a little bit, in order to kind show the client that the worker can relate to their problems. The worker should also demonstrate signs of empathy, which will encourage trust and understanding with the client, for that reason the worker should always be aware of verbal as well as non-verbal response. During this time it is also great to let the client know about the confidentiality agreement as well as the client’s right to self determination. It’s important to let the client know that the things discussed between the client and the worker will never leave the room and self determination allows the client to making the overall decision to following the treatment plan the client and worker made or not.
Factual Paragraph 4
An important concept in the treatment phase is the assessment. The assessment is used to make out the needs and wants of the client as well as the workers evaluation of the client. An assessment should be documented after each interview with the client. All assessments must be authorized.
Factual Paragraph 5
A multi-dimensional assessment allows the worker to collect relevant information in order to help them develop a picture of the clients and their conditions. The significance of the intake process is so that the social worker is able to create a Bio-psychosocial. A Bio-psychosocial is short for biological, psychological, and social aspects of the client. Paying attention to the clients’ culture can be very important it is found that most times if the client suffers from a mental disorder they in some way may be due to certain cultures.
Factual Paragraph 6
Intervention is anything that a social worker does for the client. Intervention should be based on a precise and complete assessment of the problem. This is the time where the worker makes sure that they took into account the best solutions for the client and provided them with all the services they needed, while also allowing the client the right to self determination.
What is most interesting about this podcast?
The most interesting portion of the podcast for me was the intake also known as the first meeting. I think that all workers should take into account how important the first meeting is, this is the meeting that determines how much and even if the client will feel comfortable enough to confide in you, it’s also a deciding factor if the client will even come back. Social workers need to make sure that they don’t let their bad day and attitude show when meeting with clients. You never get a second chance to make a first impression.
What can you share with other students about this podcast?
Building a great rapport with clients is very important as well as allowing the client the right to self determination. The client should never feel forced to do things they are not ready for or don’t even want to do. The client needs to decide for themselves what they should do or what they are ready for. The client should feel they can trust their worker and that the worker has their best interest at heart.

DSM-IV-TR
Abstract
The DSM divides the mental disorders into three categories: mental disorders due to a general mental condition, substance related mental disorder, and primary mental disorders. As social workers it important to know the difference between whether a client is suffering from a mental disorder or not.
Introduction
This podcast spoke about the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) and how it is used in the field of social work. Questions pertaining to the DSM will also be on the social work exam, the exam will ask questions about mental disorders that happen to be listed in the manual in an effort to see how familiar a worker is with mental disorders and symptoms or signs that may show that a client may be suffering from a mental disorder or not.
Factual Paragraph 1
Mood disorders are mental disorders characterized by periods of depression, sometimes alternating with periods of elevated mood. Paranoid Personality Disorder, Axis I - A pattern of pervasive distrust and suspiciousness of others such that their motives are interpreted as malevolent Individuals with his disorder assume other people will exploit harm or deceive them, even if no evidence exists to support it. They are preoccupied with unjustified doubts about the loyalty or trustworthiness of their friends and associates. They read hidden meanings that are demeaning and threatening into benign remarks or events. When a client comes in with this type of signs and symptoms its important that the worker either look into it to see if it could be a serious mental issue or just simply an issue a person needs to deal with in order to change.
Factual Paragraph 2
While a considerable part of mental disorders, are at least partially conditioned by the culture in which they are found, some disorders are more culture-specific than others. A culture-specific syndrome, folk illness or culture-bound syndrome is a mixture of psychiatric and somatic symptoms that are considered to be a familiar disease only within a particular society or culture. There is no objective biochemical or structural alterations of body organs or functions, and the disease is not recognized in other cultures.
Factual Paragraph 3
A systematic method used to identify the unknown is known as the Differential diagnosis. Differential diagnosis allows the physician to understand the condition or state of the client’s disorder, eliminate any imminently life-threatening conditions, plan treatment or intervention for the condition, assess reasonable prognosis, and enable the patient and the relatives to incorporate the clients’ condition into their lives, until the condition improves or if it improves.
Factual Paragraph 4
Major mental disorders are the mental disorders in the DSM. However it does not include those caused by a medical condition and or some substance. Before a worker or physician can diagnose a primary mental disorder such as obsessive compulsive disorder the worker must rule out the possibilities that a client symptoms are directly caused by a general medical condition or a substance. Ones culture is also an important factor when determining whether or not a client has a mental disorder or not because sometime client’s symptoms will reflect beliefs, behaviors or experience that are particular to their culture or religion.
Factual Paragraph 5
When dealing with clients who look to have some type of mental disorder you find that there are clients that seek services after having abused some type of substances, which intern caused them to have some type of mental disorder. On the other hand when dealing with children or teen during their child hood life some are face with an anti social personality disorder however they cannot be identify once the child reaches 18 years of age, it is only when the client is under the age of 18 that they can effectively identify if a adolescent is truly suffering from antisocial personality. It is always good to get test early is the client or parent of the client believes they are suffering from some type of disorder.
Factual Paragraph 6
What a lot of people fail to realize is that it is very common for suicide victims to suffer from a mental disorder that comes from bipolar depression and/ or depression. They actually happen to be the most common along with alcoholism and schizophrenia. In most cases a client will become suicidal a couple months after they are diagnosed or have been suffering from the disorder, we even find that even when a client seems to be getting better they may relapse back into their depression mood, when a client falls back they tend to be more at risk of being suicidal because unfortunately they have already gone through the steps they just never went through with committing suicide.
What is most interesting about this podcast?
The most interesting part of this podcast to me was the topic about the importance of diagnosing clients before it is too late, because certain disorders cannot be “considered” a mental disorder once you reach adulthood. Which seems crazy but had the client been tested earlier in life it’s a wonder what how different their life could have been or if it would of made a difference at all.
What can you share with other students about this podcast?
After listening to the podcast I believe I would share with other students how important it is to familiarize yourself with common disorders and how important it is to follow up with clients who suffer from depression and other disorders that may in time lead to suicide. You never want to be that worker who failed to take the time out to double check on that client who relapsed back into depression and committed suicide. Even when things seem to be going right with that client, it’s always important and necessary to check on the client and make sure they are doing okay and things are still looking up.

Practice Theories and Intervention
Abstract:
When working with clients tend to use popular intervention theories to help clients based on how well the intervention goes with their client’s tribulations. We will be looking at ways to work with clients when trying to use theories and interventions on clients. What one must understand before trying to use certain theories and what all should be taken into consideration before using certain theories.
Introduction:
There are four cognitive learning mechanisms they are intentional, performance, reinforcement that is external and reinforcement that is not essentially learning to increase probabilities that a learning behavior will execute. In order for a worker to be of some help to their client one must understand behavior as a whole and how people respond to certain situations and interventions in order to help them in their time of need.
Factual Paragraph 1
Play therapy is a one way of helping children with their feelings although the therapist never directly ask questions about their feeling they simply play games and reenact things in a way that is comfortable for the child, which as a result will make the child feel comfortable enough to speak about their feelings. This also allows the therapist or counselor find out what’s truly going on with a child. This is a prime example of why it is so important to start where the client is.
Factual Paragraph 2
There are three main parts when it comes to the psychosexual stage. The first stage is physical focus this is where the child’s energy is determined and their fulfillment is obtained. The second stage is, a psychological theme, this is associated to both the physical and mental burden being made on the child by the exterior world as the child lives around. During each stage, there can be two extremes in psychological reaction, they are either doing too much or not doing enough of what’s best. In the last stage the third stage, an adult character type in the first three stages this adult character type is one that is related to being engrossed or stuck at that stage. If a client never resolves an issue that appears in that stage they may always have issues with relating issues as the one they never got over.
Factual Paragraph 3
The psychosocial model is related to both social causes and psychological of dysfunction. When one reaches the professional phase of a social work it is more probable for a social worker to use the psychosocial principles in their practice if it happens to fit their client’s issues. As a social worker you will take different approaches along the way, when dealing with your client everyone reacts differently no matter how similar their problem may be. Three elements are thought to underlie the client’s improvement to therapy, his or her development of insight and changes in his effective and changes made to his environment.
Factual Paragraph 5
Behavioral therapies are said to be prior behaviors that can be untaught or changed. Behavior assessments hold opposing views from customary assessments. When it comes to traditional assessment the worker tends to focus on global traits while behavioral assessments, tend to focus on generational specific responses. The main intention for developing a child’s liveliness is to define five main stages of psychological development. There is the oral stage, anal, phallic, latency and genital stage. Within the oral stage the child’s age ranges from zero to 2 years old, the mouth is the principal erogenous zone. In the anal stage, the child’s age ranges from 2 years old to three and year’s anal region provide the major source of pleasurable stimulation. Toilet-training is a major issue in this time frame of a child's life. In the phallic stage the child’s age ranges from three to six years old, it focuses on self-manipulation of the genitals as providing the major source of pleasurable stimulation. In the latency stage the child age ranges from six years to 12 sexual motivations recede in importance, the child has reached puberty. Finally, in the genital the age ranges from puberty to adulthood, the deepest feelings of pleasure come from sexual relationships with other adults.
Factual Paragraph 6
Defense mechanisms are unconscious psychological strategies which are brought on by various things when dealing with actuality and self-image. Healthy people normally use different defenses throughout life. An ego defense mechanism becomes pathological only when its persistence bring into play maladaptive behavior such that the physical or mental health of the individual is adversely affected. The point of ego defense mechanisms is to defend the mind-self-ego from anxiety, social sanctions or to provide a refuge from a situation with which one cannot currently cope. Ego defense mechanisms, take place when the id impulses are in conflict with each other, as soon as the id impulses conflict with super-ego values and beliefs, and when an outside threat presents itself.
What is most interesting about this podcast?
The most interesting portion of this podcast was the discussion psychological development stages. As different as we all are it amazes me that we all generally go through the same stages in life however each one of us go through them a little differently. We all have our own way of putting a twist on things.
What can you share with other students about this podcast?
The one thing I believe I would share with a peer of mine is how important it is to make sure that you don’t try and use the same theory on every client just because their situations may be similar you have to look at the clients situation environment and ability to handle things. Generalizing them will only make things worse or have no effect at all.

Legal and Ethical Issues
Abstract
This podcast discussed the steps taken upon graduation and obtaining a degree in social work. Before one can actually practice in the field of social work there is a licensure exam that must be taken in order to be considered a social worker. This exam testis you on legal and ethical issues in the social work practice. As a social worker we are expected to make ethical decisions, and follow the National Association of Social Work code of ethics as a guide for professional conduct and assessment or decision making.
Introduction
Memorizing the NASW code of ethics will not help one who is seeking to be a licensed social worker. When taking the licensure exam there is no need to memorize the NASW code of ethics. As a graduate of an accredited university we should be familiar with the principles of the codes based on the NASW. When responding to the questions on the licensure questions your answers ought to be based on your professional standards and the nationwide laws and regulations not on the particular agencies policies, rules and regulations by the rules that are applied to social work nationwide. This doesn’t mean that you throw those rules and regulations out the door, they’re just don’t apply to the situations and questions asked in the exam.
Factual Paragraph 1
For the most part the NASW code of ethics is your primary resource; however it does not give the worker a precise list of rules of on how you should react in every situation. Unfortunately The National Association of Social Work code of ethics includes general information. However in a number of situations, ethical decision making will require the worker to consider laws governing the social work practice, as well as values and ethical principles. Values can occasionally get in the way with decision making that’s why its important that social workers remember to not let their personal values enter into the clients situation, the only values that a social worker should use are the social work values which are included in the code of ethics. Ethical principles on the other hand are meant to serve as a guide to what is right and wrong.
Factual Paragraph 2
On the social work exam, there will be questions that will be dealing with how one should handle legal and ethical issues that will affect the social work practice. It is found a lot of the time that certain agencies may not follow the same policies, rules and regulations as the code of ethics due to the different state laws around the world. However when taking the social work exam selecting the right answer to your knowledge it must be based on your professional standard of the laws regulated nationwide.
Factual Paragraph 3
Every client that a social worker works with has the right to confidentiality which means that what is said between the client and worker will not leave the doors of that workers office. In order to ensure the client of their rights of confidentiality the worker must first obtain valid formal consent from the client, this also goes for those clients who have been authorized by the courts, prisons or companies. When attempting to obtain a valid consent from the client there are four characteristics a worker must perform. The client must be able and agree to consent to therapy. The worker must present the client with all considerable information that might affect his or her decision to enter treatment, as it relates to the client and his or her environment. Next, the client must give his or her consent freely; the client must not be forced or pressured. Lastly, the consent form must be properly documented; this means that the worker should attain a formal signature on a printed consent form. In cases where the client is mentally challenge or physically unable to do so this task can cause some problems or make things a little difficult.
Factual Paragraph 4
Under certain circumstances the confidentially contract can be broken, without the clients consent. These circumstances include situations where the law calls for information or when the client plan to hurt another person or him or herself. In some cases like seeking to get other professional help from additional counselors or doctors, the worker must ask or inform the client before attempting to break confidentiality. The code of ethics makes it clear that the worker cannot discuss detailed information about a client’s case with other people if the client is not aware of it or has not approved of it.
Factual Paragraph 5
Confidentially is an important value that social workers must keep in mind when working with a client. The confidentiality agreement form the worker, by law, must obey all laws if not they will face penalties and in most cases will result in laws suit against the worker or even the company they worker for, or it can even result in the loss of the social workers license. Another important reason to follow the confidentiality agreement is for the safety of the worker due to small communities and some common areas that people go to the worker may come into contact with the client by accident so it is recommended that the worker do nothing to jeopardize the clients confidentiality (never know what the client may do if the find that you have broken the agreement.)
Factual Paragraph 6
“The duty to warn” was a court’s decision for social workers and other professions after The Tara Soft, which took place at a University in the state of California. This act protects the intended victim if threats are made to the worker by the client. If a client threatens to harm the worker or their family or against an identified victim, it is the responsibility of the worker to first inform the proper authority as well as notify the intended victim. A worker should never wait or let days go by before notifying the proper authority and they also should not assume the client does mean what they are saying or assume that they are only talking out of anger.
What is most interesting about this podcast?
The most interesting section of this podcast, in my opinion was the discussion about the exam and the types of questions that will be ask. I also enjoyed the discussion about the importance or the confidentiality agreement, the four characteristics that must be obtained and the consequences it may have on the worker if the agreement is not followed.
What can you share with other students about this podcast?
I would share with other student from this podcast would be the importance of taking the confidentiality contract seriously. Reminding them that no matter how juicy they may think the information or story they may have heard from the client it’s not worth losing their job, license or worth being sued. The world is so small it’s just a matter of time before the juicy story you told a friend about gets back to the person it was originally about.

Human Diversity
Abstract
This podcast was about Human diversity. Human diversity is the difference among people and how those differences make an effect on society. These differences can include biological, social, and cultural differences. It’s important as social workers that we respect all kind of people no matter what their race, gender, sexual preference, culture or disabilities are. We are all human at the end of the day and deserve respect. Being non-judgmental is one of the number one values that a worker must remember to follow in the field of social work.
Introduction
This podcast will look at and explore how important it is to respect and be understanding of one’s culture and life style decisions. Diversity in the world today is very common; it doesn’t just deal with ones race but their social and cultural differences as well. There are certain people who thought of discrete ways of living and discrete ways of how one should look at the world. A lot of the times we find that people are discriminated and looked at funny; all because they don’t understand it or believe it makes since to live that way.
Factual Paragraph 1
Treatment or consideration of, or else making a distinction against, a person or thing based on the group, class, and or category to which that person belongs to rather than on individual merit is defines as Discrimination. As a social worker we cannot discriminate and refuse service to anyone based on ethnicity, age, gender, race, sexual orientation, culture beliefs or any other related characteristics. We are here to help anyone who comes into are office we are to look at their problems not those we only like or prefer to work with because of their physical appearance.
Factual Paragraph 2
In some fields special training is required, if they are to practice with cultural competence in one or more cultures that is different from their own. Those who are counselors or those who work in the health care field have to adapt to traits of another culture, including its beliefs, attitudes, values, and language, especially those in the healthcare field. There is always disagreements on how to handle or treat a patient who is sick because their beliefs on treatment when it comes to surgeries and medication.
Factual Paragraph 3
In order for counseling to be effective cultural differences must be attended to. Those who stereotype others make straightforward conceptions of groups based on some prior assumptions. When cross-cultural counseling occurs the cultural heritage of the counselor and the client differ. It’s the workers and counselors job to be understanding or the clients beliefs and not let their own beliefs effect there counseling and assessment on the clients at hand.
Factual Paragraph 4
Working with clients who hold opposing views from your own culture can be difficult to do at times but the worker should openly acknowledge his or her awareness of the differences between them and the client. The worker should aggressively support, respect and be understanding to the clients view as opposed to the client. Some clients may not try or even want to be understanding to the workers culture differences. However if the client has any apprehension about the cultural differences the worker should address them immediately. It is best for them worker to study the particular culture they will be in contact with while at a particular agency. A client from a different culture may report an agencies performance if something should happen between the worker and client is offensive to the client.
Factual Paragraph 5
When immigrants and refugees arrive in the United States they are usually happy and positive when they arrive in the United States. Unfortunately soon after they have arrived they find themselves experiencing, depression, uncertainty and disappointment. There are likely to display the most serve mental health problems at the end of the first year through the third year after moving to the U.S. They find that all their assumption about how the U.S was going to be like was not exactly was not going as planned. Unfortunately it is found that a great deal of Immigrants tend to suffer from PSTD.
Factual Paragraph 6
Because of depression some clients may turn to substance abuse and descend into a deep depression. A good social worker should be an opening and help coach or guide the client in developing good communication skills this can be accomplished by having the client interact with other individuals, as a end result of this the client will make known more information and loose the fear of rejection or negative responses. Clients need to take on activities that will help them conduct good behavior, such as socializing, working out, and being active and a little open minded.
What is most interesting about this podcast?
In my opinion this podcast was very interesting it talk about very important things that social workers need to be aware of especially when it comes to discrimination, and respecting ones’ culture.
What can you share with other students about this podcast?
After listening to this podcast I believe the first thing I would share with others students is how important it is to study or familiarize yourself with a clients religious background before working with them because a lot of the times you find that treatment plans you come up may not agree with the clients culture and they workers may find it to be more difficult to help a client when you know nothing about their culture and practices.
